Linux firms have plugged flaws from last week, but new
 'GLIBC' hole has manifested itself

The flaws in some Linux programs that have let crackers infiltrate
hundreds of servers in past weeks have been plugged in updated
Linux distributions, but another vulnerability appears to have made
it into at least one of the latest versions.

Both Red Hat and SuSe said vulnerabilities in RPC.STATD and
WU-FTPD have been fixed in its latest distributions.

The vulnerabilities can be used to obtain root privilege remotely,
and were closed only after SuSe had begun pressing CDs for its
 new products.

But last week SuSe admitted that its latest version of the operating
system had shipped with a security hole in another program, called
 GLIBC.

Most Linux vendors endeavour to update their offerings as quickly
as possible once security loopholes and other software issues are
 discovered, said SuSe.

Ensuring that its users were kept abreast of new security issues
was a "top priority", said Roman Drahtmueller, chief security
officer for the company, who acknowledged that the boxed
product of its recent release does not contain the GLIBC fix now
available. SuSe's downloadable distributions, including a new
release for the i386 platform, are patched.

"We try to co-ordinate our fixes and other security announcements
 with other vendors," Drahtmueller added.

Linux firms are increasingly using security as a key selling point. At
Red Hat's recent launch, president and chief executive Matthew
Szulik stressed the "increased security" of the latest distribution,
especially for users with always-on Internet connections
