First Shocking Comdex Revelation uh, Revealed!
~Maximum PC
In what could be an eerie reworking of the landmark reconciliation of
bitter enemies when Microsoft's invested in Apple, Gates' Comdex 2000
keynote will include word of a new partnership between Microsoft and
Transmeta, which employs Linux founder Linus Torvalds. ZDNet News today
cited Microsoft officials as confirming that Gates will demo an updated
version of the Tablet PC the Microsoft founder first showcases in June
at the formal launch of Microsoft's .Net initiative. ZDNet's sources
also said that the Tablet PC would be powered by processors made by
Transmeta, which made a highly successful IPO today.
The report, though, included little word of how prominently the Tablet
PC will figure in Gates' address. The June first look at the Tablet PC
included Gates showing how such devices would take input from users both
with standard keyboards and with handwriting recognition. A full spec
has started to emerge with indications that Transmeta would supply the
processor in its low-power Crusoe chip.
Even despite SEC "quite period" restrictions during the run up to
today's IPO (which debuted at roughly twice the initial offering price
of $11-$13), Transmeta has been very much in the news lately. Many major
notebook and laptop computer manufacturers have announced new products
with the Crusoe chip during the past few months, including Toshiba, NEC
and Sony. The Register suggests that AMD and Transmeta are partnering on
a project around AMD's new Sledgehammer 64-bit processor, with Transmeta
tweaking the performance-enhancing code-morphing software it developed
for Crusoe to run on the next-generation processor.
Transmeta has suffered setbacks the past two weeks, too. Both IBM and
Compaq have announced that they will put on hold any new computer
products using the Crusoe chip. Indications of a partnership with
Microsoft on the Tablet PC, however, positions Transmeta for a challenge
to Intel in the market for low-power processors to run in notebook and
laptop computers.
