thanx for the reply but i guess i didnt make myself clear i am interested in adding a file type to the system when a user selects "new file" from the file menu a popup window appears this form has three tabs 1)New File 2)Use Templates 3) Recent Files on the first tab "New File" there is a list of file types starting with "TXT File";"C++";"Cobol"....... and ending with "General4" it is here that i would like to enter a new name "Alpha5" so that a user can click this entry and a new file will be created with the proper extension and if i have a default template then have is used as the starting text for the file i currently have registered the file type with extension ".a5w" and have a default template defined and this part works fine but what i cant seem to do is create a new entry on the first tab " New File" so that the user may select this entry and the template will be used to create the new file with the proper extension. thanx again martin
