What abot the FixedSys font? All Windows systems have it, and it has a bold-like appearance. But maybe it is still too small ...
How about ProFont? (viz http://www.tobiasjung.net/profont/ ) It can be found at http://www.tobiasjung.net/profont/. The web site says it's a small font, but that's not true: You can set it to 17 or 22 pixels. On my display, it becomes more than 1cm high this way. Yellow on blue or similar color settings might help, too.
