The yellow box is incremental search (Ctrl+E) - not far form S :-) - you can always hide it with Esc. This doesn't seem to be relevant for the encoding problem you mentioned, however. (Have you saved it with the correct setting utf-8 ? - You can check the info on the statusbar.)
