In 4.5.3 Build 2249 "Trim trailing spaces" is only a regular 2-state-checkbox. It would not help anyway: these spaces are not trailing but in the middle of a line.
With Editor Settings "Real Tabs" try the following 1. Press Button for "Show spaces, tabs & line ends" so you actually see the difference between Tabs and Spaces 2. Insert any Line in PsPad followed by ENTER 3. Indent the following line by pressing Tab, type some text followed by ENTER 4. You now have two lines, the second one indented by one Tab and your cursor is in Line 3 also indented by one Tab 5. Now press Tab again to indent the next line a little further 6. Type some text. Now you'll see one Tab, then two Spaces and your text!
