Good point. What if you made the justification a three-pass process? First, go through and replace all tabs with spaces (per "Tab Width") in the entire line in all lines crossed by the highlighted column. Then justify the text in the column. And finally, go back through and replace spaces with tabs in the entire line in all lines crossed by the highlighted column. Admittedly this is a lot of work.
