I did use * as the beginning of my keywords in MSC Marc. I don't know if my way is the simplest.
I put * in "Allowed chars in KeyWords:" and then I put * at the beginning of all keywords in the list, ex. *add_lines *add_nodes *add_elements For sub-keyword, I just put all subkeywords in the next list number (there are 4 list windows) and then define the color in Highlighter Settings.
