A little late on this topic, but what Jan said about binary ftp is correct. In fact, I've used ftp to translate newlines when I didn't have a dos2unix utility handy. Just transfer the file between a DOS/Win and unix box, ASCII one way and then binary the other. On the first transfer, newlines are converted, the they're not on the way back.
