I use CTRL+mousewheel font resizing often, though I wouldn't optional remapping. For scrolling in large files, I used to bookmark the middle of the file with CTRL+SHIFT+5 (then return to with with CTRL+5 and less mousewheel action).
For the past two years, I've been using a Logitech MX Revolution - its microgear precision scroll/button wheel is brilliant for scrolling through hundreds of lines instantly.
