The big html programs (Dreamweaver, Expression Blend, etc) use a bar on top or
bottom of the editor which displays a list of tags (buttons) based on where the
text cursor is at in the DOM.

If you click directly on one of those buttons it highlights the opening/closing
tags and content which they contain, in the editor.

Perhaps some scaled-down version of this could be used. I also would like to see
matching tags for all html, including html 5, but I understand CPU usage is an
issue. 

Most html editors today represent the page internally as a DOM tree.
