I updated by unzipping the contents of the 597 64bit file into my 64bit
installation folder (C:\Program Files\PSPad). After starting up PSPad I noticed
that all my custom settings were reversed (e.g. tab width, window size,
highlighter options, etc.).

Since older 32bit PSPad builds had the habit of randomly reverting to the
default PSPad.INI settings I took a manual backup of my working PSPad.INI file a
few months ago. Once I noticed that the 597 build reintroduced this settings
problem I stopped PSPad, copied my backup PSPad.INI file over the current one in
the %APPDATA%\PSPad directory and restarted PSPad again.
