Because... These commands were becomming less and less useful for
actual ECC testing, because they had a funny protocol that no one
could agree on (by 1997 there were many different implementations for
the transfer of the ECC bytes) and ... I don't recall that anyone
could put up a good argument (an argument that would change votes in
T13) for keeping the commands. You must remember that if no OS uses
the command, the command is likely to disappear over time. I think
most people thought then (and continue to think) that this
functionality, if supported by a drive, is the reason we have "vendor
specific" commands.
