Why? What is this fascination with a technology that is 20 years old?
What would these "various parties" do if disk drives didn't have ECC
but some other very advanced error correction scheme? What if a disk
drive was really a RAID internally (drives are big enough to do that
now)?

I think it is time for these "various parties" to wake up and
understand how modern disk drives actually work!
