3.3V is intended to power the logic in the drives. This is anticipated to reduce the overall power requirements of the drives. $

Can some describe the recommend approach that the SATA standard developers envisioned for system manufactures during the transition from legacy PATA HDD's to SATA HDD's where the SATA spec. calls for 3.3v power?
