Hello Henry, I agree with you just about IP bit. If the initialization pattern need to be specified by the Host, the only way to do so is by using Initialization pattern descriptor. But regarding IMMED bit, the bit has been independent from the setting of FOV from SCSI2. I don't remember the reason, but IMMED bit is controled by FOV only in Mt.Fuji, MMC-2 and 3. So, if the Host set both FOV bit and IMMED bit to zero, the device shall recognize that the Host specifies to execute the format process with the device's default defect management options (certification, initialization pattern, primary defect list handling etc.), and with non-immediate. Only when the immediate option is specified explicitly by IMMED bit, the device shall execute the format as the immediate prcess.
