Dear T13 Committee: I forgot a CFA committee liaison item at last weeks meeting. The CFA is encountering problems with software that does not conform to the ATA specification. CFA devices set 848Ah in Identify word 0 to indicate that they are CFA cards. The value is not supposed to be interpreted bit-wise but some software does. Incorrectly determining that the media is always removable, the application blocks booting. The CFA would like CFA devices to be able to report codes other than 848Ah and still be ATA/ATAPI standard. This sounds like a good idea to me. The requested change is listed below. If there are no objections I will ask the editor to make the change and then we can vote on it in December. I will also add a standing CFA liaison report item to our agenda. In section: 6.16.9 Word 0: General configuration The Compact Flash Association would like T13 to change the wording in ATA/ATAPI-7 from Devices supporting the CFA feature set shall place the value 848Ah in word 0. In this case, the above definitions for the bits in word 0 are not valid. to Devices reporting a value of 848Ah in this word shall support the CFA feature set. In this case, the above definitions for the bits in word 0 are not valid. Best Regards, Daniel J. Colegrove Hitachi Global Storage Technologies [EMAIL PROTECTED] (702) 614-6119
