Another fun place to look is word 0, bits 12-8 of ATA op xA1 IDENTIFY
PACKET DEVICE.  According to ATAPI-6, the value in this field
"...follows
the peripheral device type value as defined in SCSI Primary
Commands...".

Knowing the PDT should make you more comfortable in trying other
commands.

Once you know to look at MMC, MMC does provide further clues.  I will
stop
there though because, as Pat pointed out, we are off topic.
