I thank everyone for their reaction (inside and outside of the forum)

The end conclusion must be that it would be possible to write something 
which can detect some cases. And when detected, the detection would be 
quite reliable.
There are however quite some cases where detection will fail. When one 
drive uses pull-down and the other one pull-up resistors interesting cases can
happen.(would need to dig a bit deeper into this part).
