I’ve had positive response and comments from my previous posting, so I have posted an updated version of the FIS Mapping document for the Serial Transport. This document now includes the Command, Control, Device Bits, Status, and PIO Setup FISes. There are no protocol changes or technical changes, but rather a re-characterization of the FIS Types to be as FIS-based and not task file based. This caused some difficulty in terminology, especially with some of the use of hardware terms for the registers and register bits. I think that I struck a good balance of maintaining the “ATA Legacy” learning curve, and yet converting the Serial Transport descriptions to be task-file independent. I also converted the FISes to separate 28-bit and 48-bit Command Features Set mappings. This was necessary because the definition of the fields in the FISes changes depending on the Command Feature Set (this was conveniently ignored in ATA-7). Curtis and I had to overcome a lot of issues to separate the Command Structure Volume and the Serial Transport volume from the parallel bias embedded throughout.  We will discuss this in detail at the meeting next week, and happy to hear your opinions in advance.  This document and my other posting e04140r0 will form the basis for the Serial Transport volume in ATA-8.
