I am incorporating this proposal into ATA8, but the proposal does not define the normal or error outputs.  I am inclined to keep the some ones that DM currently uses.  During internal discussions, there were some questions raised about normal operation of the new mode.  There has been concern expressed that there is no real way to tell when the drive has received the last segment and started using the new microcode.  I have had 2 suggestions to solve this problem:

  1. The drive can set a bit that indicates it is expecting more data.  When the drive accepts the last block of data and clears the firmware this bit would be clear.
  2. The drive can return the next buffer start in LBA (23:8).  When the last block is accepted the drive would clear the buffer start to 0.

I will bring a proposal to the next meeting based on feedback.  Dan, would you please give me a document #.
