and more to your specific point, in the T13 meeting tomorrow (oct 19) we will be discussing my proposal to begin the process of documenting and having T13 take control of standardizing attributes. please see > http://t13.org/docs2005/e05148r0-ACS-SMARTAttributesAnnex.pdf This is on the agenda to discuss tomorrow. This initial proposal was intended to get people's attention and to start the discussions needed to proceed. As I originally planned, I have split the proposal into three independent proposals, which I intended to have proceed on their own merits. These have not yet been posted to t13.org, but the attendees at the meeting have a copy of these documents. They will be posted in the <very> near future. e05171r0 - documents how to extract the attribute data from SMART READ DATA It does not document any specific attributes. I am proposing that this go into ATA8-ACS as an informative annex. e05172r0 - proposes that T13 become a central authority for the issuance and definition of attributes, and sets aside ranges of attributes as reserved, for future assignment and definition. It also establishes the level of documentation expected for attributes defined via T13. e05173r0 - proposes to document as many existing attributes as possible. It acknowledges that due to legal non-disclosures exchanged between multiple parties, that the documentation of specific attributes may take some time, but strongly encourages 'owners' of attributes to make public disclosure and to release that information from any NDAs that covered it. The initial feedback I am receiving indicate that the time is ripe to open this discussion and that I am seeing cautious support for the concept, in general. I hope that this discussion will address your concerns. Everybody: Please feel free to share your views on any of these proposals on the reflector, or privately to me. SCT provides a standardized way of doing this. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jeff Garzik Sent: Tuesday, October 18, 2005 9:54 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [t13] Temperature sensors This message is from the T13 list server. At the moment, reading the temperature sensor(s) of an ATA device is highly non-standard. I would like the vendors to get together and standardize an approach. Regards, Jeff, the Linux SATA guy
