I agree. Mechanical drawings (ought to) list maximum and minimum hole sizes and
other tolerances. It is impossible to measure these tolerances with callipers
when you only have one physical sample -- the calipers merely check whether or
not that sample falls within the stated tolerance.

Still, physical samples are very handy to have.

Often I see mechanical specifications that only list 1 reference point on a
connector. Then I have to go to the connector manufacturer to get all the little
details of that connector. Connector manufacturers are putting more and more
stuff online these days.
