One could use a good quality active patch antenna and build a *choke
ring*for it, that would improve its performance substantially.

A choke ring is a series of concentric circle traps of the correct length
to attenuate signals that are likely to be multi-path.

The dimensions are online.

Also, most people must know this already but those patch antennas all need
to be on a ground plane to work properly.
