A warm greetings after accomplishing the Software Freedom Day. Let me update the happenings on Software Freedom Day Celebration: (Initial report)

On Saturday, September 16, 2006 Yala Maya Kendra at Patan Dhoka acted as a melting pot for hundreds of like minded FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) enthusiasts as they all celebrated the third annual Software Freedom Day 2006 while making the most of the ideal platform to showcase their creativities and explore new possibilities in the field of FOSS.
The event, being celebrated for the second year in Nepal, was organized by the FOSS (www.fossnepal.org) Nepal Community and supported by various organizations including BellaSAP and MPP. Around 20 colleges under different universities including Prime College, Kantipur City College, Kathmandu University, Nepal College of Information Technology, Pulchowk Campus, Kathmandu Engineering College, Cosmos College and Nepal Engineering College participated in the event. Around one thousand participants from different colleges, private sector, government offices, civil society and media participated in the day long celebration.
After the informal inauguration at around 10 am, the celebrations continued with an array of different parallel events throughout the day. The paper presentation segment had a total of nine treatises on FOSS delivered by students and faculties from different colleges and other FOSS enthusiasts, while there were also the installation, demonstration and troubleshooting of Linux distribution like NepaLinux, Ubantu and Open Solaris and FreeBSD along with exhibition of FOSS projects developed by different colleges and FOSS enthusiast professionals. The FOSS Nepal Community also made a appeal to Government sector, civil society, educational instituition and other stakeholder demanding FOSS/ OC (Free and Open Source Software and Open Content) to be given first priority in their policy and implementation. A Declaration was made in English and Nepali during the celebration. (attached herewith).
The other events of the day included Open Space where participants could initiate new discussion on new project and get support from other participants or share their projects or express their views and make suggestions regarding FOSS. Screening of a FOSS-based documentary called CodeBreaker, FOSS IT quiz, distribution of TheOpenCD and Ubantu CDs and a food festival were other highlight of the SFD celebration.
FOSS Nepal Community expressed their delight at the encouraging participation of during the celebration and asked all participants to ensure the motto of the FOSS Nepal Community: "FOSS for the people; Lets make iT FOSSible".
The celebration came to a informal closing after certificates and prize distribution and group photo session of the FOSS Nepal Community.
