hi shashi,

glad 2 know that you're tryin to do something for schools back in nepal.

while olpc would be fabulous once they get into the hands of the children,
for now LTSP can be an excellent solution for computerizing the school. u
might have already done some research on this, using LTSP u can have a
powerful server and diskless cheap client computers which connect to the
server and share the resources. for server a P4 with around 1GB RAM is
enough n for client diskless old computers will do.. a server can handle
upto 10 computer quite easily..

now u calculate the cost, a server costs around 30K and a good client costs
no more than 10K here in nepal..

n btw, ltsp project stands for linux terminal server project, n obviously
the system is linux based.

we (IOE FOSS Community) on collaboration with Help Nepal Network have been
doing ltsp projects in different parts of Nepal. till now we've setup labs
in dang and bhaktapur.. similarly, madan puraskar pustakalaya (mpp) is also
workin on ltsp project, they've setup labs in phulchoki and dailekh.

now since u're in usa n wanna help, can u manage to send us some old
computers?? those old computers might be of no use for u but they can make a
lab here..

n another thing u can is come back to nepal as soon as ur studies are over..
:) our country needs minds like u..

regards,
jwalanta.
