My PERSONAL favourite is ESET, NOD32 antivirus.
Picking a AV as BEST is difficult. I could recommend a AV that i think
is LOGICALLY best according to me just based on certain criteria.
Like, if you are to impalement some policies with flexibilities of
active directory using linux (PAM and other scripts) as an alternate
would be very difficult but if you are to implement a real time system
using window would again be a mistake.
I'd say Bit diffender av is best when it comes to detecting virus
inside archives, multiple dynamic decompression engine etc so is
kaspary AV. But when it comes to AV gateways (say exchange/mail
server) you may want to disable this feature or drop attachments based
on MIME contents and/or extensions instead of making your first line
of defense.
Also, symantec av is lousy for desktop but enterprise edition is quiet
nice also considering deployment and managing factors.
Again, if you are a technical person with some basis in the related
disciplines you might want to try NORMAND antivirus. Which also relies
on BEHAVIOR based fingerprinting with traditional signature based
fingerprint. You could also use its sandbox to have some idea about an
attachment (*cough* mail ware) and make a logical decision.
But, generally servers employ solutions that have MULTIPLE av engine
doing the scanning simultaneously instead of relying on single AV for
entire protection.
so to conclude.... choosing a BEST AV('es) is solely governed by your
requirement, cost etc
and did i missed to praise AVG for some of its benifits..... lol
