Hi all, *Sorry for x-posting*
This is interesting, the 'Give 1, Get 1' scheme from OLPC: http://www.tectonic.co.za/view.php?src=rss&id=1747 Cheers, Subir --- OLPC announces 'Give 1, Get 1' scheme By *Staff Writer* 25 September, 2007 The One Laptop per Child (OLPC <http://www.laptop.org/>) project has announced a new scheme in the US and Canada to accelerate the machine's slow uptake. At the same time, learning programmes are set to begin in various African locations in October. DesktopLinux <http://www.desktoplinux.com/> reported that OLPC will be introducing the new programme in the US and Canada on November 12. "You give a laptop to a child in the developing world and get a laptop for yourself, or to give to a child or school, for $399, where $200 [of that total] is a tax-deductible donation," Walter Bender told DesktopLinux. "The goal is two-fold: jump-start the laptop program in the least-developed countries and broaden the community of users, developers, and support group for the laptop - to engage the broadest possible community in this global learning project," Bender said. A key issue in the price of the laptop - currently around $150, significantly more than the intended $100 - is that of sufficient numbers of the laptop being produced. As demand increases and more laptops are purchased, the price can be reduced from its current point. The 'Give 1, Get 1' programme could potentially help this problem, by driving up the number of laptops needed. In the New York Times yesterday, OLPC chairman Nicholas Negroponte acknowledged that orders were slow, adding that he had to "some degree underestimated the difference between shaking the hand of a head of state and having a check written ... it has been a disappointment." In other news from the organisation, the OLPC team announced<http://wiki.laptop.org/go/News>the formation of a learning team that will assist countries with developing their own learning teams, so as to allow for the countries to develop a 'deeper understanding and richer practice in using laptops for learning'. The first collaborative workshops will be held in October in Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda and Nigeria. --- --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ FOSS Nepal mailing list: [email protected] http://groups.google.com/group/foss-nepal To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Community website: http://www.fossnepal.org/ -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
