in public domain it was known group of scientist cracked cracked DES
around 1996-97 with hardware (whose details was also released online)
in 56 hrours time (blur memories)

inface i am writing a book on above mentioned topics and beyond about
how to defend your privacy in digital world, anti forensics,
intelligence analysis, physical security and more.

FOSS ppl. i would love to be in a close seminar for few days someday
with a marker and white board if you guys get intrested enough in such
