Google's open source contest for youths

Building on the success of the its last three Summer of
Code<http://code.google.com/soc/>programmes,
Google <http://www.tectonic.co.za/tagged.php?tag=Google&src=intag> has
announced the Google Highly Open Participation
Contest<http://code.google.com/opensource/ghop/2007-8>geared for
pre-university students.

The programme's aim is to get younger people involved in all aspects of open
source 
<http://www.tectonic.co.za/tagged.php?tag=open%20source&src=intag>development,
from fixing bugs to writing documentation and doing user
experience research.

Open source projects in which participants will become invovled are
Apache<http://www.tectonic.co.za/tagged.php?tag=Apache&src=intag>,
Drupal <http://www.tectonic.co.za/tagged.php?tag=Drupal&src=intag>,
GNOME<http://www.tectonic.co.za/tagged.php?tag=GNOME&src=intag>,
Joomla <http://www.tectonic.co.za/tagged.php?tag=Joomla&src=intag>!,
MoinMoin, Mono <http://www.tectonic.co.za/tagged.php?tag=Mono&src=intag>,
Moodle, Plone <http://www.tectonic.co.za/tagged.php?tag=Plone&src=intag>,
Python <http://www.tectonic.co.za/tagged.php?tag=Python&src=intag> and
SilverStripe.

The contest is open to all students who are 13 years older and are enrolled
in a pre-university, such as high school or a secondary school. All
contestants under the age of 18 will need to have their parent or guardian's
consent to participate where applicable.

At the end of the contest, contestants will receive a t-shirt and
certificate for completing at least one task and $100 for every three tasks
completed, up to a maximum of $500 per contestant.

There will be 10 grand prize winners who will receive a trip to the
Googleplex in Mountain View, California, for an award ceremony for
themselves and one parent or guardian.

Entries were opened yesterday and participants can join up until January 22.
The competition ends on February 4 and winners will be announced on February
11.
