I work closely with OLPC's School Server Architect Martin Langhoff and our recent discussions have brought up what could be a very cool Google Summer of Code project. http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Summer_of_Code
Martin will be designing a new web-based administrative interface for the School Server (XS) and hardening all the underlying services so that it will be a very tough, robust appliance. A great GSoC project would be to propose a new web-based interface and optimizations to the underlying linux services to make the School Server very, very tough. Sulochan Acharya, myself, and David Van Assche (Belgium) will be working hard on the XS here in Kathmandu so you would get plenty of local feedback on your work. Martin is one of the leading developers of Moodle and has made a lot of contributions to Debian. I can't think of a better mentor to have.
