Welcome to the first edition of the newly revamped Linux newsletter from
TechOnline. I remember my first experience with Linux when I was just a
wet-behind-the-ears student learning about operating systems. It was then
when my friend introduced me to Unix. I listened to him rant and rave about
Linux and it's importance to the world of programming. It was only later
that I would realize what a revolutionary piece of software it was and how
much it changed the landscape of technology. Linux was to me, the forerunner
of open source development. With this newsletter, I'm hoping to share some
of the interesting developments from the world of Linux.
NEW LAUNCH: In response to reader demand,
TechOnline's<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0BE4j0E3>sister

basics: Running Linux on a 32-/64-bit RISC architecture - Part 1
<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUP0Ei>
In the first part of a six-part series, Dominic Sweetman, author of ' See
MIPS Run Linux' gets down to the basics on how to implement Linux on the
MIPS 32k/64k architecture. Part 1 takes a look at GNU/Linux from high above.

2<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUQ0Ej>
Domenic Sweetman's second installment investigates how the software and
hardware work together in a Linux/RISC system.

[image: image] The third installment in the six-part series takes a look at
what happens during a system call in a Linux/RISC architecture system.

to consider when choosing a Linux
distribution<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUS0El>
The belief is that many Linux distributions are the same and picking one
should be simple and pain-free. The reality is that each distribution is
different where some will be more suitable to your or your company's needs
than others. This video looks at five critical factors IT managers should
consider when choosing a Linux distribution.
Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) folds into LiMo
Foundation<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUT0Em>
The Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum announced that activities and
membership are folding into the LiMo Foundation as of July 2008 to address
the growing adoption of Linux platforms by the global mobile market.

meaningful dialog
<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUU0En>
There is a definite need to move beyond the polarizing 'either/or' debates
about Linux versus RTOSes and the need to move towards a more nuanced,
fine-grained dialog about the future of embedded operating systems.

server to a mobile OS
<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUV0Eo>
Enhancements to the core Linux kernel, its associated software environment,
run-time pieces, and development tools made Linux a competitive alternative,
the OS of choice for some, and a state-of-the-art OS for mobile devices for
others.
Embedded Linux: With friends like these, who needs
enemies?<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUW0Ep>
If embedded Linux champions are saying that embedded Linux is terrible, why
would anyone want to risk their products or their company on it?

welcome to mobile
party<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUX0Eq>
Linux developers welcomed Google Inc. to the campaign for mobile Linux, but
added that the Open Handset Alliance must join the list of existing
coalitions trying to drive Linux.

Robotics and Process Control: Sensor, Actuator and Control Circuit Examples
<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUY0Er>
This excerpt from the book "Open-Source Robotics and Process Control
Cookbook" offers techniques and example code using an autonomous submarine
project as an example to show how to prototype complex systems. It's an
overall system configuration where all devices are connected directly to a
Linux SBC.

easier<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUZ0Es>
Linux can make networking simple and secure and this article details some of
tricks to ensure that. Jack Wallen from TechRepublic provides info on how to
perform various Linux networking tasks with a minimum amount of effort.

million. Novell and Red Hat
profit<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUa0Ez>
The strangest paradox continues...Why does Microsoft keeps upping its
investment in Novell's SUSE Linux certificates while simultaneously
denouncing Linux for violating its intellectual property and generally
wishing for the demise of the Linux kernel?
[image: image][image: image]Would Linux help Adobe pummel
Microsoft?<http://newsletter.designlinenetwork.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/hBLKC0ItgHd0Wix0GaUb0E1>
The suggestion that Adobe customize a version of their Creative Suite
software package that is optimized for Linux as a method of 'payback' to
Microsoft is explored in this article. Good idea? Bad idea? You be the
judge...
