While designing the poster, I had (in my mind) some assumptions and there were some constraints that had a great effect on the deliverable (i.e. the poster in our case). I think it's worth putting those assumptions and constraints that could act as a rationale to complement/justify my design: _*Assumptions/Constraints:*_ *1. The key terms defining our tag-line, and their sequence:* a) Think (nothing comes out if you can't think) b) Create (this is where your concept/dream/structure comes to implementation) c) Share (unless creation, sharing is impossible) i) Sharing is the most important. ii) That's why, you can see the metaphorical representation of "Share" action is relatively larger in area. d) Experience (It's how you verify/validate your creation. Learn what was the factor that you were not able to look at, and improve your creation.) e) Collaborate (It's generally after the first prototype is designed, and you collaborate with your co-members to patch-up deficiency and/or improve your creation. *2. The use of B/W and Color both:* a) Creation is formless, and at times it can take the form of anything. Hence I tried to justify this point through the use of B/W and color. b) The emphasis on B/W is to refer to think/create stage where you are completely in dark about the idea, and finally you incrementally add colors. c) The B/W photo being mostly "OUT-OF-FOCUS": It's one of my trick to focus on the basic idea of creation, and to emphasize that the creation is far more important than the fact who created it. d) The fact of abrupt change from B/W to color: i) A design issue that I (at that time) didn't give much preference. (Really I was in a lot of pressure!) ii) It is to emphasize that creation's transition is not always smooth (which is always desired), but at most of the times bumpy (not desirable). Here I focussed on the latter part. *3. Use of pictures of children:* a) I have used them to metaphorically and/or pictorially represent the actions of "Creating", "Sharing", and "Collaborating". I've heard that pictures convey more than text. :-) *4. Deficiency of a placeholder for logos of contributors/supporters:* a) Here, first of all, the name-list of such firms/organization was not available at that moment (and it isn't even now). b) We can't wait much to have these logos; it's already September 10 today, and just 10 days left to go. Printing Press will take at least 8-9 days to get these printed (Materials team beware!). How much are we going to wait?? c) Initially I tried to have a place holder for logos at the position of venue and time information, and position the venue and time info at the top somewhere (the same way I had designed the poster for previous SFD). Now, even if we need a placeholder for logos, we can switch to this option. But I need it asap. *5. SFD '08 starting at 9:30 PM!:* a) That was really a blunder, a typo, my mistake. I was in such a pressure working over it, i missed to cross-check. Thank you for reminding. *6. Use of a neon-type lines/curves on the B/W portion at the top:* a) I can see that it doesn't somehow blend with the B/W background. But I needed something there, because that place was looking empty, unimportant. b) It's just a design design to embellish/decorate the overall poster. c) I tried to somehow map it with the "Synergy effect" in creation.
So that's how the design process went on. And what's above is the state of my mind at that time (sort of the output of the command cat /proc/mymind, :-P ). Thanks. Regards, Abhishek Singh
