Hi, Genuine Windows for people of poor economies like our country Nepal costs $3 which is the same fee Microsoft charges for XP on OLPC(Yeah and that consists of Office and other MS toys). I fail to see how it affects our "knowledge, education and livelihood" in our country even if it wasn't $3. My college's internet rooms have about 50 computers running pirated windows XP with a big bundle of other pirated softwares. They did try Fedora, but was removed almost immediately. My college is Nepal Government's property. Cyber law(if it exists) fails here which is a good thing, right? atleast for the time being? Helping people switch to a free operating system like Linux also fails because using linux independently on the long run requires more than average computer knowledge most of which includes touching the commandline. Next we are so much dependent on proprietary softwares although most of our day to day computing needs can be easily performed on Linux(except may be Games). And guess what? The new generation of pirated XP will be shipped with anti-black screen patches(or have they already?)
