But, is there any GUI there? In my project, i hardly tried to avoid Matlab... and tried to work & sleep with Octave, Scilab... but.. they were really really hard for me to work quickly. Moreover, Matlab has really some concrete libraries & facilities for specific engineering purpose. As for example: for image processing, Matlab has a complete standard facilities than others.
