win-modems on linux can be a tough nut to crack. I never had any success in using my smartlink moden in either of the linux distros (nepalinux, fedora, ubuntu). i'm not using internal modems any more and already has been some years; things might have changed now (though i seriously doubt that it's now simple). good luck to u.
