Search this group with the title "USB modem" and I think You will find helps you need. If you have canonical ubuntu cd it wont play mp3 files or DVDs. You need to install codecs for that. And if you have good speed internet go to System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager and search for "ubuntu-restricted-extras" and install it It will solve your multimedia files I also recommend you to install VLC player
If you cannot have very good internet connection ask for an apt on cd with restricted multimedia codecs.
