Pravin ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: subhash kattel <[email protected]> Date: Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 1:49 PM Subject: Summer Sponsorship To: [email protected] Parvin sir It is my pleasure to meet you at Vrihaspati Vidyasadan. I enjoyed the short but useful conversation with you. I hope this meeting results to receive the sponsorship and possible opportunity to co-work with Norwegian part for some genuine Nepalese friends. What do you suggest, should we give the application time-line or just live it open for the interested students/individual? My thought is to say the application date is up to 31st July, 2009. We give a month to complete the 'sponsored task'. And, so, at the end of the task we will provide NPR 10,000/ person 'sponsorship' for the completion of 'sponsored task'. feel free to contact for further information. Sponsored Tasks
Platform
- Ubuntu 8.04 or newer.
- PostgreSQL 8.3 or newer.
- Ruby 1.8.6 or newer.
- Rails 2.3.2 or newer.
Improving RedHillOnRails plugins
There are several plugins that make Rails and PostgreSQL to work better together. The schema validations plugin has a bug where it handles partial indexes incorrectly. The plugin depends on the redhillonrails_core that parses indexes.
- Create a test case that demonstrates the problem.
- Read the relevant source code and suggest a solution that we can review.
- Implement your solution after it has been reviewed by us.
Improving ActiveScaffold
The ActiveScaffold framework has a non-optimal search path handling. Look at the engine code in Rails, and the template loading of ActiveScaffold, and suggest changes needed to:
- Use the app/views engine catalog in active scaffold for templates.
- Continue the current support for custom templates on a per controller basis.
You may continue with emplementing your plan once we have rewieved it.

{VERIDIT}.2009 Student Summer Sponsorship
During the summer 2009 we are sponsoring eligible students to work on select open source projects. The program is an initiative to both support students using open source software in Nepal, as well as to establish relations with skilled students in Nepal.
Nepal is amongst the poorer development countries, and license fees can be a prohibitive cost. With open source the students have access to all the internals of the programs with cost. As long as they have the proper skills they may enhance and adapt the software to their liking. It was natural to place the student summer sponsorship in Nepal, due to our previous work on projects in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Traditionally there has been little activity within the field of open
source in developing countries, as open source requires extra skills, free
time and an extended ability to independent work. We believe that open
source could play a more important role in Nepal, if there where more people
with the right skills.
We believe that there is a market in Nepal for open source, and that there
is a potential for cooperation between Norway and Nepal in the field of
open source software. Open source software is to a large degree limited
by the number of skilled people available, and by the labour costs. By
cooperation between developed and developing countries we believe that
various parts of projects can be implemented cheaper and with satisfactory
quality in developing countries.
Most closed-source companies that try a strategy of outsourcing to developing countries run into the problem of training, as they must train all staff especially for their system. With open source systems the students may experiment and learn independently of us, and are therefore free to expand their knowledge and improve their skills to a larger degree. By working with open source software the staff are also free to use the systems and the knowledge in later jobs, and as such it is a long-term investment.
