Well Binaya,

I think the Universities and colleges can understand that Microsoft is a
business oriented company. That means they also understand that every
activity they are involved always has a strong business aspect. Also
colleges and universities tend to follow open technologies and not be binded
to any proprietary systems. So as long as the colleges and universities
are conscious enough, Microsoft wont be a big problem.

But if the college administration cannot or does not want to see through all
these, then the conscious students must make them aware that Microsoft just
wants to suck away money from their students and do nothing more. Also, it
is to be mentioned clearly that students should focus on learning new
technology and not learning about some specific new product.

The best stance would be constant exposure of students to open source by
holding various training and advocacy campaigns. If the students find the
knowledge of open technology a worthy asset, they would themselves demand
that open systems be installed on their lab computers and not
some proprietary systems.

Regards,
Sulabh Bista
