Too bad my university makes me use windows but here is my list of 25+ things
you install after installing ubuntu (lets say a web developer/php developer
special)


   1. Yakuake/Guake - Command line tool
   2. Gnome do - Application Launcher replacement for Alt+f2
   3. Amsn or any other
   4. Adobe Air for Balsamiq, tweet deck, polaris
   5. WINE -> IE
   6. chrome
   7. Htop - Process viewer command line
   8. Listen (Music Player) - If you don't like Amarok or VLC
   9. Git-core (GIT), SVN - Rapid SVN, CVS  - MELD, GItk
   10. Scite(Text Editor) - if you like a new text editor or IDE
   11. Shutter (Screenshot Tool)
   12. Skype for Linux
   13. Ubuntu Tweak - Good for new ppl
   14. VLC
   15. Amarok
   16. Java SDK - for eclipse and other things that use java
   17. Eclipse - best IDE if you want to try out see Net beans
   18. Xchat
   19. RoR - Ruby - try goggling it more
   20. Virtual box - if you want to run windows inside linux
   21. drush - Drupal - may be too specific for you
   22. IE4Linux
   23. netspeed - to check the up and down speed as a widget in top bar or
   bottom bar.
   24. parcellite - for clipboard manager
   25. Hamster applet - time tracking activities

   Google some more :)
