Welcome Bishnu to the FOSS community. Those replies above are great. You could use this FOSS General Introduction Primer for the purpose of the presentation and advocacy:
http://www.iosn.net/foss/foss-general-primer/foss_primer_current.pdf Well thats the first step never the less. You can start with replacing proprietary softwares in the library and labs for example Mozilla, OpenOffice.org etc. I mean you can migrate slowly by first getting Free and Open Source Applications on Windows. When it successful and popular you can migrate some workstations to linux itself. Well in Kathmandu University (In 2004/05), we started with installing GNU/Linux in 3 workstation in library which was never used and was supposed to be dumped. By looking at what Linux had to offer the library staff asked us to install the GNU/Linux system in some more workstations. The ones with Windows always had the problems like virus, blue screen of death and it was also slow compared to the GNU/Linux. I talked with the staff and asked them why people use library computers and the reason was just to check emails, research, work with office software, chat. We were successful because this could be done easily in GNU/ Linux os with less hassle. All you have to do was put to install amsn, openoffice and mozilla. The staffs in the Library found that GNU/Linux system was far better and wanted to put in every computers in that workstation. All we had to do is isntall the os and make a chart where we introduced the softwares they could use. We also had to teach them how to use pen drive. But only doing so won't be enough, FOSS gruoup should monitor the workstations and help maintain. The responsibility comes to you. We were successful in replacing whole library workstation system and in the later years one of the 3 computer lab migrated to GNU/Linux operating system. I shared with you the story of Kathmandu University just as an example. You can examine your collage computer users and migrate so that you don't force people but rather you make the people and staff realize that this is a better os which offers greater benefits. That's about migration. If you want to take part is the projects, well there are lot of members here who could suggest you where to start and which project you could get involved in.
