First go to recover mode forgot that. AFAIK ubuntu works this way grub > plymouth splash > gdm(login window) > DE session. In which part does you screen go blank. Try starting gdm from root in recovery mode `sudo start gdm` and see if login window shows or not. Whats you hardware specification ?
