I actually do not know why your solution doesn't work but we have been
using these two lines and it works great
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [L,R=301]
This has been borrowed from drupal's .htaccess file.
