Dear Salina,
As the matter of facts extension really don't matter in linux
distribution. The file is identified with it header/Meta data.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_%28command%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_file_signatures
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOS_MZ_executable

Linux supports almost every file-system but ext* family in most
popularly used across various distribution. Read Something about file
system you might get much better idea.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_system

The reason of the file permission is one of the major factor why even
the virus made for linux really don't effect in first hand.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_system_permissions
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware

I guess after reading bit of reading you will be expert in linux
filesystem in no time!

Regards
Rhoit
