like linuxcandy said openbox wm has low overhead
an immediate solution could be to switch to "unity 2d" at login (by
clicking on the circle to the right of "Login" text)
one more possibility could be due to hybrid GPUs
if you by chance happen to have two graphics cards
(for example: intel HD 64 MB for light graphics demanding applications
plus: nvidia/ati x MB/GB for high graphics demading
applications like games)
then the problem could be easily solved by disabling your nvidia/ati card.
