*Question: What keyboard layout would you suggest for Nepali if you could have it developed by Google.? *
Keyboard layout is a very important thing and if you wish you could type in Nepali, what would you want. Ultimately Google or someone else will develop a keyboard layout for Nepalese. However someone would like to know what the people want before developing it. *So Provide a name of the layout you wish for*: Any Screenshots, links or name of the layout can be included: Eg: 1. Nepali Keyboard Layout (Traditional) 2. Nepali Keyboard Layout Romanized. *My opinion (in italics)* * Nepali Keyboard Layout(Traditional)** I personally like Nepali Keyboard Layout (Traditional) The Nepali Keyboard Layout (Traditional) had been developed by MPP, and long before was in use in the typewriters. The preeti font was one of them. Romanized keyboard Layout. **People have been using Romanized keyboard layout because they started typing English first and then they feel easy to type in English which would be converted into Nepali. Which is also called the Romanized Keyboard Layout. * *Now since the mobile users have been using it in English they won't be unhappy by using the Romanized keyboard Layout. * * * *Differences: * *This is a very delicate question and people have discussed over it for years. We won't be able to find a solution. Its like should we use DVORAK <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard>or QWERTY thing. * * * *As of now, The Traditional <http://madanpuraskar.org/downloads/Nepali_Traditional.zip>Keyboard Layout is analogous to QUERTY <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY> started along with the age of typewriters such as the Newspapers and press have long used it. * *The traditional layout is a bit more scientific than the Romanized. * * However the Romanized <http://madanpuraskar.org/downloads/nepali_romanised.zip>keyboard (analogous to DVORAK) is being more popular because of the English users. * * * *Both of them have some deficiencies and sometimes having both is kind of a complementary. * * * *Earlier to encourage the traditional users and to preserve our scientific writing style I have created and added the keyboard layout for windows here<http://code.google.com/p/nepaliwikipediatranslator/downloads/detail?name=NepaliKeyboard.zip&can=2&q=>. * * * *Typing in Romanized is slow and inaccurate because you have to type as if you were typing in English and sometimes it is not so accurate because it is typed as it is spelled. * * * *Typing in Nepali Traditional layout is accurate and easy however new users will have to learn. There won't be the benefit of English thing in this. That's all. * *However typing in Romanized is easier in the sense that it is an English-Nepali (Romanized keyboard) * * * * * *Typing in Romanized is easier for New users. * * * *What does Wikipedia Use? * *I have seen the Narayam interface in Wikipedia and I(and a lot of I's who have originally typed Nepali in typewriters before they could type in English in Computers), I am not happy with it because 1) It does not have our Traditional Keyboard layout, 2) It is based on English and it is more affiliated towards Hindi. * *To type Hindi there are enough keyboard layouts. Some of the characters of Hindi are not used in Nepali . * *Wikipedia uses a different kind of Romanized keyboard layout. * * * *In my opinion, users will search for both the traditional and Romanized keyboard layouts. * *In India people will search for Inscript keyboard layout. * ================= -- Rajesh Pandey -- FOSS Nepal mailing list: [email protected] http://groups.google.com/group/foss-nepal To unsubscribe, e-mail: [email protected] Mailing List Guidelines: http://wiki.fossnepal.org/index.php?title=Mailing_List_Guidelines Community website: http://www.fossnepal.org/
