Can we know more about your system? In the first case I believe it is because your system can not support Unity. I believe Unity used to be quite graphics intense. Have you tried choosing Unity 2D (or I guess 11.10 used to have GNOME Classic as well)? I think you should try the latest version (13.04), Unity is much better now. And about that "disk read error," do you mean you get the error while installing Mint?
