 The
Role of the Individual Open Source Contributor

[image: Open Source]The recent controversy regarding tax-exempt
organizations and the IRS may have focused on political advocacy, but one
of the side notes that emerged was that *open source software groups were
also on the IRS watch list*. The IRS claimed that the majority of these
organizations were really fronting for-profit companies with open source
products.

This does bring up larger questions. Many open source projects now are
primarily maintained by a single company, or they have major full-time
corporate resources behind them (such as the Linux kernel). Is there still
a place for the independent contributor anymore, or has open source become
the domain of the corporations?

What's your take on the subject? Let us know at
[email protected]<[email protected]?subject=Programming+Newsletter+-+Is+there+still+a+place+for+the+independent+contributor+anymore?>or
share your answer on Twitter, hashtag #ormprog.

tail -f /dev/newsletter Prank Wars

[image: Pony Car]We've all seen pictures of cubicles full of packing
peanuts and other office mayhem. Evidently, however, the pressure of
designing ultra-high-end graphics boards has been especially stressful over
at *NVIDIA*, resulting in what may be the mother of all prank
battles<http://post.oreilly.com/rd/9z1z7lukm9apfna3b018s1jcgku6ckmjrim95a8ov1o>
.

In the latest salvo, one particularly prolific prankster got his just
desserts when a crack team transformed his car into Pinkie Pie, the
party-happy My Little Pony, over a lunch break. To discerning eyes,
however, the vehicle bore more of a resemblance to another
character<http://post.oreilly.com/rd/9z1z9rlhojlac47c6geler3o8qarg966rn09cnusbkg>from
that show.

The victim retaliated the next day with a Jar Jar Binks cubicle
infestation. We're glad the folks at NVIDIA are having a good time, but we
can't help but wonder if they might want to spare a moment or two for some
less important things, like decent Linux drivers.
