I agree with learning by doing. But you need some basics before starting. Learn some basics from the above links, do the exercises, then think of a project. I don't believe that it needs to be something new. Just make what you want to, it doesn't matter if someone has already done it better, just don't copy their code. Think of your own solutions. That's the way to learn.
