Looking at it from the prespective of a creator of software: there are
several business models for FOSS that work and you can read about them on
Wikipedia:

But there is also another prespective to look at it from, that of the
consumer of software. If I am company with 1000 employees then I need to
buy 1000 licenses for Windows for my staff. Am I better off getting a
open-source OS? Maybe, maybe not. There is the cost of support, which for
Windows might come included in the price... but then again maybe I am
better off hiring a team of techies to work for my company and support my
open-source OS.

My point is this: as a developer who is interested in FOSS you could also
earn a living while working on it WITHIN an existing company that uses
FOSS.
